Suzhou's old town features tiny canal-side alleyways, elegantly arched stone bridges, traditional whitewashed buildings and beautiful gardens. While many come to Suzhou for its refined heritages, the big draw is the city’s historic gardens. However, visiting smaller gardens such as the Garden of Cultivation gives a better sense of the peaceful havens the gardens were originally designed to be. Walking in the alleys of the old town, there is always a surprising amount of history and culture along the streets.
Suzhou is one of the first national historical and cultural cities with a history of nearly 2,500 years. It is one of the important birthplaces of Wu culture and has the reputation of "paradise on earth". The representative of Chinese private gardens - Suzhou classical gardens and the Suzhou section of China's Grand Canal are listed as world cultural heritage by UNESCO.
Shantang Street is located in the northwest of the ancient city of Suzhou, Jiangsu Province, east to Changmen, the "first-class and second-class rich and romantic place" in the red dust, and west to Tiger Hill, "the first scenic spot in Wuzhong". It is called "Qili Shantang to Tiger Hill".In the Tang Dynasty, Bai Juyi was appointed as the governor of Suzhou. He dredged the northwest river outside the city of Suzhou and excavated it into the Shantang River. The ancient street built beside the river was called Shantang Street, and the streets were all ancient buildings. Most of the ancient buildings are buildings in the late Qing Dynasty and the Republic of China. In 2010, Shantang Street was awarded the title of "Model Unit of Chinese Cultural Heritage Protection" and was named "Famous Historical and Cultural Street in China.
